    Note for myself:
-The band is on a small but noticeable roll...don't fuck it up. The new music is amazingly difficult to play, yet sounds 10 times more organic than our old stuff.
-Started writing music for another project with a a monster drummer. The music is more modern jazz-fusion than The Pant Factory.
-Desperately need to work on my school compositions. (one hour's worth)
-Can't wait for the baby to be born. I know it doesn't compare to being pregnant, but the wait certainly sucks.

So my band is looking for another guitar player (a second one...I'm not being replaced just yet). We want to get the word out to some excellent players in the area that might be interested. Ideally, we want a fair audition, but right now we are trying to invite random people out to play and give it a whirl. We are (I am) looking for someone with good chops (rhythm AND lead), an excellent ear, and good musical communication skills (reading music would be best, but not necessarily a must). Good gear is preferred. We are giving out two of our tracks to be learned, plus a cover song (21st century schizoid man). The audition will also have some improvisation jams, sightreading (or the auditory equivalent), and some anal rape.

If you guys know of anyone who might be interested, or perhaps would fit the bill, then please send them my way:

oh...and I have a very limited friend's list on this here livejournal (like 4 people), so if anyone would like to pass on the word then go for it.

"Vancouver’s Veda Hille is an indie singer/songwriter who fashions classical instrumentation and catchy tunes into an erudite pop style. This Riot Life, her latest CD, draws on a wide assortment of influences. Its frequent eschatological references and cryptically, messianic-tinged lyrics (“Ace of the Nazarene,” “Book of Saints, ““Rose of Sharon”) represent a recent find: an old hymnal belonging to her grandmother.

The harmonic sophistication and extended formal designs of her songs reflect Hille’s classical training, as does an unorthodox rendition of “The Moon,” a Shelley setting by Paul Hindemith. Prog-rock inflections are present too; “Book of Saints’” hook cribs the chord progression from the final section of Yes’ “Starship Trooper.” And “Lucklucky” combines minimal ostinati and a chamber orchestration with an abundantly appealing chorus. Who would’ve thought that Hindemith could rock?!?"

I pulled this from sequenza 21 (bitchen contemporary classical music site). I'm beyond blown away by her music.

    jealous? a bit.
Man, scale the summit just got signed. Do you know what that means? The Pant Factory needs to step this shit up! We have an album that is ALMOST finished (almost = we have been mixing for weeks now). Out t-shirts will be finished tomorrow, which is cool, but we don't have another show until January, so nobody will know about them for a while. We have a lot of work to do.

All I can say is that when our album is done and folks start hearing it, some serious shit will hit the fan in Houston. Gus (the drummer/producer/engineer) has done a fantastic job on this record. Considering the circumstances of the album (we did it all ourselves, our gear was shit, and we had no REAL studio), I would give it an 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. I'm proud, and that matters more to me than anything. The artwork is going to be spectacular as well. Matt Staib can draw like a mother fucker.

With that being said, we are all incredibly excited to start on the material for our next album. Our gear will be much more professional, our recording knowledge will be enhanced greatly, and the songs are going to cause everybody's genitals to explode. The idea floating around the band is that the first album is already going to knock people on their feet and we had almost no idea what we were doing, so we only have nowhere to go but UP!

It took us two years to write the album's material, which makes a lot of sense, because for the most part we really had no real idea where we wanted to take anything. Now we do, and it is fucking intense. The material that we've thrown around so far is scary.

    divine reserve
Guess who was first in line at Spec's this morning to pick up a case of St Arnold's! It sure as fuck wasn't me! Houston has a lot of people that definitely fit the "alcoholic" profile. I got beat out by frat boys, hobos, and old people. But I did however snag a case this magical brew.

Why is it so desirable? This is what I found in my inbox last night, hot off of the Saint Arnold AP wire:

"Yes, the much anticipated release of Divine Reserve No. 5 will occur
tomorrow, Tuesday, September 11. Most stores will be receiving it
tomorrow, but some have a delivery day later in the week. This beer is a
Russian Imperial Stout and was inspired by Mike Heniff's winning entry in
this year's Big Batch Brew Bash. It's deep black in color with a dark
tan head. The aroma is sweet coffee and chocolate with some alcohol
coming through (it is around 10% after all.) The predominant flavors are
coffee, roast and chocolate. It has a malty sweetness and a hoppy
spiciness. The bitter chases the sweetness but never quite catches up.
It is perfect to enjoy while eating some dark bittersweet chocolate or a
bowl of vanilla ice cream. I went a step further and attempted making
an ice cream float with it - not recommended. We brewed this beer
into one of our larger fermenters, so hopefully those of you who have been
frustrated in the past in your attempts to find a Divine Reserve w
ill be rewarded this time. We also made a very limited number of kegs
of this beer and these will also be going out to select draft
establishments tomorrow. It will be released in Houston, DFW and San Antonio
tomorrow. Word is that our Austin distributor jumped the gun and it
    started going out on Friday."

And this is pulled from there site:

Our Divine Reserve is a series of single batch beers, each brewed with a completely different recipe. The batches are identified by the number on the neck label. There is no particular theme to the beers, although it can be assumed that most all of them will be big. Many will benefit from being aged.

Since we brew such small batches, and the releases are closely watched by our loyal fans, the Divine Reserve sells out quickly! Sign up for the Saint Arnold Newsletter to be alerted to future releases.

Reserve No. 5: Russian Imperial Stout
    Cases Made: 1,276
    Date Brewed: June 25, 2007
    Date Bottled: August 28, 2007
    Original Gravity: 1.097
    Final Gravity: 1.029
    Alcohol: 10% ABV

    Description:

This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer.

Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception. DR5 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used an American ale yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered.

Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

    Life update
    Hey Gang,

I love that Dillinger, Behold...the arctopus, and Between the Buried and Me all have records coming out in the coming months. I also dig that they are all coming to town, as well as Zappa plays Zappa! I love that I will be going to all of those things.

But do you know what I hate? I hate that Scale the Summit is opening for BTBAM. STS is a bunch of musically sophomoric bullshit, that is in almost no way any more entertaining of musically viable than anything my band, nor MANY others in the Houston area, have ever or will ever do. But, for some reason, these Douche bags totally think that they are by far the only thing worth listening to that is coming out of Texas. I read an interview with one of the guitar players that really made me want to punch him in the balls repeatedly. I will post the link following this paragraph. This guy is totally loves to hear, read, listen, smell, taste, and make love to every single ounce of anything that escapes himself and his band (and all that the mind can conjure). Not to mention the dumbass "journalists" who interview them and do their album reviews. I am pretty appalled by how much these writers stroke CHRIS LECHTFORD (8-STRING GUITARIST)'s 12 yr. old nutsack. Dudes...HE'S NOT THAT AWESOME, AND NEITHER IS SCALE THE SUMMIT! They are a good band for the most part, but they talk more shit than any other group I have ever seen. The shit they talk isn't even anything that should bother me, but they come across as very condescending, under-handed, and pretentious. Almost everything I read sounds very insulting to EVERY other musician that has ever worked even remotely hard at what he/she has done.

    1. Adventure metal is the gayest genre name I have ever heard. It makes me want to give sad-core another listen. Images of The Never Ending Story, Bayou Billy, and The Secret Garden come to my mind...and that ain't cool.

    2. Their music is not that technically demanding. Sure, it is written for a higher caliber musician than most mainstream music, but by no means does it even hold a candle to what MOST bands in their genre pull off. The main reason for this is because of their one-dimensional sound and complete lack variety. They seem to have mastered the art of playing the same mono- temporal, 8th note tetrachord with the pedaled root at the same speed for almost every fucking song. Its really boring and does not show off what can really be done on their instruments. Whoever reads this, please do not ever use the words superior "technical abilities" when referring to why anyone should listen to your music. Superior to who? Their will always be somebody who is going to be superior to you and your lame ass single-note licks. But I guess you are superior to 12 year olds who read guitar world magazine. Don't be a cock bag. Want something technically demanding? Try writing something that is rhythmically interesting with a harmonic scheme that VENTURES outside of the 2-chord, mono/homo phonic box that you noodled yourself into.

    3. Their music is not REALLY melodic at all. Only by the actual definition of a succession on pitches is what they do melodic. What they do is riffs derived from chords/ arpeggios that are repeated over and over and over again. At least when Liszt and Debussy did it they actually went somewhere with it, not to mention developed the living shit out of it. And whenever Scale the Summit actually gives you something of real melodic substance, it sort of reminds you of something familiar...something from your past. You know what it is, but you can't put your finger on it. Ah, Yes! It totally reminds you of Irish Jigs, Pirates, and Jack London novels. I guess their music actually is Adventure metal...in that homo-you-like-white fang-pirates-and leprechauns sense of the word.

on a good note, Saint Arnold is unleashing their private reserve today. I'll clue you in later.

    oooooooh...exciting!
So I got emailed the first batch of a set of six scored movie-cues from my friend Nathan tonight. I'm supposed to transcribe, orchestrate, and conduct this shit! I'm beyond excited/ecstatic. There's going to be around 10 minutes of music that'll ultimately make it to the film, so I'm thinking that I'll have to work through quite a bit more than that before editing, but I'm not sure. The music that I've heard already sounds like it'll be real fun to figure out. I can't wait to start working on this. I'm nervous as fuck about the conducting part of this, which is totally new to me (aside from the classes I had to take). I'll be practicing the fuck out of that.

    Feels like productivity to me
So I just finished emailing two of my professors from UH whom I haven't really talked to in a LONG TIME. I felt awkward giving the "sorry for the delay in me saying thank you" email, but it was long overdue. I tend to put things off until the last minute, especially correspondance. One of the professors I emailed was my old composition and 20th century techniques teacher. I need to speak with him about the possibilities of getting into grad school for writing music. He invited me over to his house to talk shop, so hopefully things will go well (going well= him not yelling at me about Beethoven or how my music sounds too Russian).

Speaking of my music, I also just returned from Kinkos. I had two of my scores bound. They look nice. I have been feeling really uneasy about applying to grad school. A)I don't have a degree in composition, B) I don't have very much experience in composition, C)I have yet to hear any of my works performed. After today though, I am feeling pretty confident that I could eventually make it happen. I spent this weekend and today editing my music and typing up cover sheets and program notes. It feels great having my music in my hands, bound and edited thoroughly. Even though I know that I still need to make a few changes here and there before I send them off for school, at least I can feel and SEE the progress that I have made. I feel like I could show these to just about anyone right now. I think that that is half of the battle. The other half is having good recordings. I almost have the players I need for the quartet and I am still in need of a pianist for the trumpet piece. Anyone want to give it a shot?

    tired old bonez
dream theater has a new album coming out. i downloaded an mp3 that's out. this is exactly what i've always wanted:
dream theater pretending that they are metallica! awesome! metallica! woo...

There are some kickass moments, like the guitar solo, but seriously i fucking hate metallica. actually, i find most metal to be rather boring and repetitive. DT is coming to town in august, so i'll go to that, and i will buy the album when it comes out. I still haven't bought the last release yet, which is a live cd and dvd. I haven't bought it yet because i borrowed it and gave it a good listen. IT SUCKS! ever since metallica released an album of them playing with an orchestra everybody in the dream theater community has been creaming themselves to have the chance to hear DT with some sort of orchestral backdrop. well, they released a live album with an orchestra, and it blows. i probably could have written those half-assed arrangements and found my own orchestra to play that out of tune! It was like their keyboardist was like, "here are my parts...go work some magic, by which i mean to double everything that i am doing." pathetic.

on a good note, i've discovered a lot of great music lately. Steven Mackey, John Corigliano, Chris Theofanidis, Bela Bartok, and John Adams are on my "to do" list of things to study the fuck out of right now. It's like i'm being bombarded with color, architecture, and a new perception of time ALL AT ONCE! also, i've been teaching myself modal counterpoint for the past two months. 16th-century sacred vocal polyphony is by far one of the most pure forms of music that i have ever heard. I think William Byrd and Palestrina are two of my favorites.

This recent kick on developing my counterpoint has really opened up a new approach to listening to music for me. all of those "buzz" words that all of my teachers threw at me on a daily basis for all those years have finally made sense to me. i don't know if i can attribute this to my endless studying efforts that's i've been putting in...or all that pot i've been smoking!(im only joking of course)

i think i am finally putting together all of the pieces of my life that have always been there, but always scattered about, out of order. SHITS B MAKIN SENSE 2 ME!!!1!

    Music is a biotch
I just got finished spending about an hour and a half analyzing the first movement of Beethoven's 7th string quartet in F major. Shortly after this piece had primered, Murio Clementi (fellow composer whom Beethoven had admired during his early period) commented on how Beethoven couldn't possibly have intended this to be music, to which Beethoven simply replied, "Oh, it's not meant for you, but for later times to come." I must say that he is probably now one of my favorites. I used to dislike a lot of the more "well-known" classicists because they were too accessible. There is definitely a reason that people still study his music. I've been reading through an assload of scores lately and come to realize that to this day, there is hardly a composer who has tested, challenged, and executed more craft in his works than Beethoven. Despite a rather great deal of innovations in harmony, form, and motivic development, his music is incredibly clear and utterly seemless. To the naked ear, his works are just another example of 19th century classical gobbldy-gook. I say this with great pleasure, so GO PICK UP A SCORE and follow the line!

Oh, and here is a link to a video of one of my favorite guitar players in action (BRANDON...YOU MUST CHECK THIS OUT):

i have a lesson today with vassallo. Kathryn is coming in as well. my recital jury is on monday. i can honestly admit that i am worried about it. i think that this is probably the most stressful thing i have ever done. i wish it were all over; people are suffering for it. after the lesson today, i get to go teach. i have all of my gaps today filled with students from another teach (just for today though). i get paid tonight, which will rock something awesome. my band is almost done with the initial tracking for our demo. while im happy that we are almost finished, i am still a bit bummed about my particular contribution to the work. in my mind, everything that i do is subpar.
i think i disappoint amanda too much. i really let her down last night. i also bummed her out this morning...because i am grumpy when i wake up. i dont know that i make her all that happy anymore. this hurts me quite a bit. knowing that she is unhappy because i make her unhappy is the worst feeling. (im sorry amanda).
our no hope show got cancelled (was supposed to be nov4). i am glad. i forgot about it until gus told me last night.
